Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong.

I never guess. It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.

Give a man a fish, and you'll feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he'll buy a funny hat. Talk to a hungry man about fish, and you're a consultant.

10/28/07 03:11 pm - Talent, Skill, Interest and Expereince

A talent is a gift that you are born with - it's something that you can do easily and naturally such as your breathing.

A skill is something you learn to do. It may draw upon the talents.

An interest is something that draws you, that speaks to you.

An experience is something physical that you have done OR an emotional or mental perceptions that you have about something.

If you develop an ear for sounds that are musical it is like developing an ego. You begin to refuse sounds that are not musical and that way cut yourself off from a good deal of experience.

I guess all that sugar and fat jazz up the emotions because I feel much better right now than I was while last night locked post...

10/20/07 03:04 pm

I would do anything that would allow me not to feel this way - I pulled my crumpled comforter down my waist, my thoughts jaded, my eyes finding hard to open up, my hands hitting the side table all over managed to look at the cell phone and it was already 1:00 PM. I woke up heavy headed, reached my closet to pull a worn pair of jeans,  my fingers ran through my disarrayed hair, I stood looking deeply  into my own eyes staring back at me in my bathroom mirror.... was I ****** all night?

Management works in the system; Leadership works on the system.

You can’t talk your way out of what you’ve behaved yourself into.

There are three constants in life... change, choice and principles.

The way we see the problem is the problem

Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly.

While we are free to choose our actions, we are not free to choose the consequences of our actions.

Our ultimate freedom is the right and power to decide how anybody or anything outside ourselves will affect us.

It's easy to say ''no!'' when there's a deeper ''yes!'' burning inside.

~ Stephen R. Covey

I wouldn’t coax the plant if I were you.
Such watchful nurturing may do it harm.
Let the soil rest from so much digging
And wait until it’s dry before you water it.
The leaf’s inclined to find its own direction;
Give it a chance to seek the sunlight for itself.

Much growth is stunted by too careful prodding.
Too eager tenderness.

The things we love we have to learn to leave alone.

8/8/07 11:55 pm - It's all cyclic yet -

It's all cyclic yet not identical, the difference is in the detail, in subtlety.

For example, there used to be a time when I thought I have to be really be on top of my email communication. I used to respond to emails as fast as possible, often instantaneous. I still get a "wow" feeling when i mail someone and even before I could blink I see a reply to it.

But you have to be highly selective and careful, maybe use the discipline to not instantaneously reply to those mails that are not supposed to be... (I am not talking about the ones where you react outrageous, flame mails or the ones that you are supposed to take a deep breathe, wait until you re-read it later and reply after you have slept over it).

But even if you are selective and taking proper care to reply, there is still little advantage to immediately reply to those mails that I do. Rather they tend to be distractions, that's the biggest problem I am mostly grappling with lately.

I now check my mails only twice or thrice a day. Though this is similar to what I used to do before I got into the bandwagon of "being on top of my emails" (i mean in a way that I get back at them asap), there is a subtle difference between now and then. Now it is purposeful and  more methodical than the chores I follow after I check them.

Well the principle applies to many things that are systemic and email is just one instance.
